We couldn’t help but picture Apple CEO Tim Cook laughing maniacally in his head as the Cupertino-based company planned the iMac with Retina Display, a 27-inch monster that boasts the world’s first 5K display. Though Dell was the first to reveal a 5K screen back at IFA 2014, it has yet to be released. Apple is the first to market with a 5K monitor, not to mention a computer to house it.
The new iMac all-in-one computer boasts an obscenely high display resolution — 5,120 × 2,880. 1080p displays, currently the computing industry’s standard, have a fraction of the number of pixels this beast houses. As for 4K, those monitors boast resolutions of “only” 3,840 × 2,160.
But, there’s more to this machine than its screen. On the hardware front, the base model that Apple sent us packs a quad-core, 3.5-GHz Intel Core i5 CPU with 8GB of RAM, a 1TB Fusion Drive, and an AMD Radeon R9 M290X GPU. Returning with this iMac is a super-thin design that emits a breeze of familiarity, but an enjoyable one at that. The entire package comes to a grand total of $2,500.
