In Magic the Gathering a card that affects the outcome of the combat step is commonly referred to as a “combat trick.” These combat tricks have existed since Giant Growth in Alpha, an instant speed way of increasing your creature’s power and toughness so it now beats the creature blocking it in combat. Generally speaking combat tricks are not hard removal and instead help shift the outcome of combat, most frequently by buffing your own creature to come out on top in the exchange.
