Shirakawa-go is located at the Ogi-machi in the Ono District in Gifu Prefecture. About 100 Gassho houses are remained in the village, and even in nowadays, some of the locals are still living in the Gassho.

Dams were built along Sho River between 1945 and 1955 and quite a few communities were submerged below water. Some Gassho style houses were sold outside of the community and some were burned. The number of houses decreased drastically from 300 houses in 1924 to only 191 in 1961.
